Medical Tourism In Tunisia

At present, Tunisia has nearly 80 private clinics with an accommodation capacity of 2500 beds, and most of these clinics are well developed and endowed with the latest technologies. With more than 8000 doctors whose qualifications are full acknowledged and recognized in Europe and clinics that are compliant with all European standards, Tunisia attracts more and more Brits, Germans, Italians, and French, people from Belgium, Swiss, Portuguese, and Spaniards.

The number of foreign patients having been treated in private Tunisian clinics has grown from around 42.000 in 2003 to 83.000 in 2007, according to figures and statistics provided by the Ministry of Public Health.

Près de 80% de ces patients sont originaires des pays maghrébins. 10% proviennent des pays d’Europe occidentale. Le reste vient essentiellement des pays d’Afrique subsaharienne.

In general, foreign patients come to Tunisia to undertake specialized surgical operations in the fields of cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, gynecology or even urology.

Europeans are particularly attracted by the good reputation of Tunisian doctors in the field of cosmetic surgery and ophthalmological, orthopedic and dental cares: these treatments are not covered or hardly reimbursed by health care insurances in their country; what makes them undertake the trip are the fairly competitive rates practiced in Tunisia.

A cervical-facial lifting costs 2500 euros while the same operation in France will cost 5000 euros. The costs of dental prostheses and ophthalmic surgery are equally beyond any comparison with those in Europe. The rates are 40% to 60% less expensive than rates paid in Western countries, one week stay also included.
